Save the world. Okay, let's do it. What is it going to take? I believe the education is the KEY to social innovation and solving the problems of the world. Education will equip us with vital information we must understand, and also allow us to share and teach new ideas and ways to others..
My thoughts on the secret of social innovation begin with constant exploration of the problems. One tip listed was "Understand." We have to understand the cultures, understand the needs. We have to understand that though a situation may arise, the obvious solutions may not always be the best. To be a social innovator is to go beyond the superficial, to get to the depths of the situation. We have to understand the roots of the problem and how every person is affected. We have to understand the goals of the people who need the help and make them our own as opposed to imposing our own goals upon them. The amount of information there is to learn and understand, the number of people who experience the problems require that we always be a student.
The other side of learning is teaching. As we bring our own experiences with us on this journey, let us share what we already know. This does not mean requiring others to do things our way, but to share the possibilities and present the information in ways that everyone can understand and use. Having a great idea doesn't help if that idea can't be shared with others in a way they can understand. The best way to help a group of people is to teach them the skills they need to handle the problem themselves. We will never be able to take care of everyone. We can only teach them how to take care of themselves.
And so we must find that balance between being students and being teachers. That's how we will begin to make a small dent in saving the world.
