How do we fix something we know nothing about? How can we attempt to solve a mystery when we don't look for clues? We can't. Ignorance limits us with fear, bias, and pride. It is a suppressing wave that pushes us backwards, never forward. When we try to solve a problem without any true understanding of the situation all we do is exacerbate the issue, making it even harder to straighten out. It takes awareness, and the willingness to observe everything around us: the environment and its natural resources, local experts, the level of technology, etc. Only after this first step can we even semi-accurately begin to come up with ideas to solve the predicament.
In the military there is a saying, "Adapt, Overcome, and Improvise". The ability to adapt to any situation requires that we study our surroundings. What is the terrain like? What are the average weather conditions? What is the wildlife? What is the local culture like? How can I become a part of this world/environment? After this the next question is: how can I help better this world I am now a part of, and what can we use around here can we do it with? When we look at problems this way we help our societies overcome their problems, instead of the other way around. We improvise with what we have. We keep it as simple as possible.
Observation and understanding are our most powerful weapons against ignorance, and the key to unlocking new solutions to old problems.
