I'm going to admit to being a little ethnocentric with my money. I worry about my own investments when I'm relatively rich compared to many people on this Globe! As a result, one of my favourite ideas for the future of money is socially-responsible banking and investing. Every time your money sits in the bank, the bank is using it for their own stuff. So, I like to make sure that my bank is using that money wisely instead of investing it in high-return things with which I don't ethically agree, like the tobacco industry or industries that destroy the environment. It is a wonderful idea because even selfish "rich" investors like me aren't losing money. We're just being more mindful about the ramifications our dollars have.
For example, my local bank is a very socially-responsible bank.
ShoreBank Pacific, based here in Washington state where I am, has the following mission statement:
"ShoreBank Pacific profitably assists businesses, and through them
their communities, to be sustainable in economic, social, and environmental practices." The bank is also committed to internal environmentally conscious practices such as being carbon neutral and recycling. Right now, they offer a
"Help For Haiti" Certificate of Deposit that donates 1% of the interest to Mercy Corps Haiti relief! Without even giving away a dime of your own money, you can actually benefit yourself by saving money and also benefit those in great financial need!
Small and short-term investments aren't the only mindful investments you can make. There are countless mutual funds that put money towards your ethics while paying back big dividends! I would never hand my money over to a tobacco company or a cosmetics corporation that tests on animals, but it turned out that was just what I was doing when I invested in the diversified mutual funds with the biggest returns without looking at what companies were involved! There are countless socially-responsible mutual funds for you to research for yourself, including the Winslow Green Growth fund (WGGFX), the Green Century Equity (GCEQX) and the Green Century Balanced (GCBLX). Check out all the ones that support the development of alternative energy, too! Now that's a financial future I'll put my money on!
