The case study that impressed me most is the one of the "Society for the Promotion of Eco Cultural Tourism and the Environment" in Benize. The first aim of the Society is to protect the endangered Green Iguanas and their natural habitat at the area of Macal, Mopan and Belize Old Rivers. The other is a long term goal: They want to improve the quality and standart of living of the society´s members through community participation in the eco cultural tourism business.
Due to mechanize farming along the river banks and a huge increase in population as a result of migration from Central America most of the river vegetation has almost disappeared and the animals like the green iguanas have migrated. As a result the tourism decreased, too.
All this happend in only two decades.
Because of the imense posibilitys of the tourism related activities (especially the financial ones) community interest and participation in finding an immediate solution to the problem, like the overfishing and too much farming. The Society have started a conservation project and they have environmental messages on the media. Furthermore they are holding a series of environmental educational workshop in schools, for farmers, stakeholders, youth groups, and others.
In my opinion the idea of protecting the flora and fauna by tourism is a good connection between economic and recourcefulness point of views.
But what I like the most about the case studie is "the lesson learned" :
"Some five years ago, many residents from the river bank communities were victims of the infectious Ch***ra Decease. Malaria has been a constant attacker too. Since most of the villagers are wage earners today, they have realized that most things that once was considered free and existed in abundance , is in danger of disappearing, and are becoming very expensive. Hence, the interest to protect and conserve what remains from the old days. Our Society is also involved on a national educational-environmental tour , to help create the necessary awareness about the need to have a healthy environment, and assist other organization that might request our help. We have realized that the problem is national and that the approach should be a collective one, if results are to be achieved. Looking forward to hearing from you in the near future!"
The approach should be a collective one, if results are to be achieved. That is a statement that you can transfer to nearly every problem that is needed to be solved.
