From Wikipedia:
"The solar updraft tower is a proposed type of renewable-energy power plant. It combines three old and proven technologies: the chimney effect, the greenhoue-effect, and the wind turbine. Air is heated by sunshine and contained in a very large greenhouse-like structure around the base of a tall chimney, and the resulting convection causes air to rise up the updraft tower. This airflow drives turbines, which produce electricity. A successful research prototype operated in Spain in the 1980s, and many modelling studies have been published as to optimization, scale, and economic feasibility."

Although the concept has been around for a while, its potential is only now starting to be harnessed. Last year the Minnesota State University conducted a study of the potential to develop this solution on a small scale to make it suitable for use in, for example, regional Africa.

There is also potential to use the solar collection space at the base of the chimney as a greenhouse.
On the other side of the equation, minimising energy consumption needs is also part of the solution. The Eco Button is a gadget that saves power on your computer; and when you have to hike for miles to recharge, that's got to be a boon.
