Can you name a traditional belief system outside of Christianity, Islam and Judaism? There are probably thousand of belief systems in the world. No matter what you believe in the key is to have respect for all beliefs. So by now you are probably wondering what does one's beliefs have to do with food security. I recently took part in some ritual to give thanks to Mother Earth and to promote the fertility of the soil at a small community farm in Baltimore. It was a beautiful event attended by about 15-20 people ranging from babies to elders. The ritual was led by a good friend of mine named Taharqa who is an African American but practices the belief system of the Dagara. He was taught and initiated by Malidoma Some. You can find more information about Some on his web site
www.malidoma.com. ; During the ceremony, a large mound of earth was made on the farm. All the people who came brought seeds, fruits vegetables and grains to place on the mound. As all of the items were placed we sang songs to give thanks to Mother Earth and to ask for a bountiful crop. The farm where this all took place is located on a small clearing of land in Baltimore. The farm serves two purposes 1. To teach the young people that work it how to grow and provide fresh fruits and vegetable and 2. The value of work and giving back and not just taking. As the crops grow I will have to keep everyone informed of the progress.
