The secret of social innovation that I have discovered today is:
Embrace market mechanisms (Giving stuff away rarely works as well as selling it.)
It is one of the secrets reveled at this great article. All others I already knew (or more precisely they were intuitive to me). But I would have (until now) thought that something great should be given away freely. After giving it some thought I realized that in the world that we live in that probably wouldn't be the best and certainly not the most efficient way to promote it.
People tent do distrust (unfortunately rightfully so) anything that is given away for free. Or if they do not they will after someone uses that trust to against them. But a well rounded product or service with strong marketing campaign and affordable/reasonable prices could very well attract much larger clientèle. Let's face it people do buy a lot of marginally (at best) useful items be it from TV-sales or various presentations. It is reasonable to presume they will buy what we offer them, especially when we don't have to stretch the truth about it's usefulness.
