After much debate I finally got up the courage to send an e-mail out to the hero I am shadowing, Deb Levine. I don't know if I'll get a response, but I can hope. Even if I don't at least she will know that I am inspired by the work that she has done.
If any of you are interested, here is a copy of the e-mail I sent her.
Dear Mrs. Levine,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is
Justine Roberts, and I am currently a third year Psychology student. I
am also a member of EVOKE, an online game dedicated to inspiring the
minds of future social innovators. This is where I found a link to you
and ISIS. I apologize if you are already familiar with how EVOKE is set
up but please allow me to give a brief introduction. Each week we are
given missions to carry out, all include critical thinking, research and
decision making. One of our tasks for this week was to 'choose a hero
to shadow', and we were provided with numerous links, linking us on to
numerous people to research, and inspire us.
This being said, I
found your video on the Pop Tech Social Innovators website. I have to
say I was greatly intrigued by the information and concepts you
presented in the development of ISIS. ISIS inc hit an area that was
close to home with me. I currently work in a first year residence
building at my university, and we see and hear a lot that goes on in our
students lives. This allows us to form close (or sometimes not so
close) connections with our residents, and I have to say that the
statistics you provided made me cringe. To think that statistically 3
out of the 6 girls that live just on my floor will have an STD by the
age of 25, and knowing that some of them may not have the courage or the
resources to openly ask for help and/or information just broke my
heart.
I'm barely out of adolescence myself, and remember the
awkward times of wanting to know more about my developing sexuality and
other sexual health matters, and boy can I, if I had known about ISIS
then, it would have definitely been my saving grace!
I know that
this e-mail may seem very bizarre, and I can honestly say I am quite
nervous as I write this, but I just wanted to let you know that you, and
ISIS are an inspiration to me, and I have chosen you as my hero.
I
have goals of moving forward with a career in mental health services in
the far off years after I'm done my preliminary education, and hope to
help contribute to economically accessible mental health care,
especially for young people. How you have developed ISIS and the lines
of communication have given me hope and inspiration that this is truly
an achievable goal. I greatly thank-you for this.
I realize that
this e-mail may seem very bizarre, and I can honestly admit that I have
been quite nervous writing it, but I just wanted to let you know that
you, and ISIS are an inspiration to me, and I have chosen you as my
hero.
Thank-you for your time, and your inspiration
-Justine
Roberts
I'll keep you all updated if I do happen to receive a response. Whew, I glad I got up the courage to send that out though. I'm a huge believer in giving credit where credit is due, but I never thought it would be that intimidating to give it to someone whom you have never had contact with!
