I am a Chef and the more I look a food the more I see that there may not be enough around if we keep up at the pace we are out. We are over fishing the seas, then we set up fish farms that don't really provide better fish and increase the toxins and illnesses in that area. We try to focus on one cash crop that drains the nutrients in land, have to use insecticides and hormones. Things that could be removed if only we were to diversify our crops and rotate the land a little our quality and production could rise. If we were to plant several different plants together we wouldn't have as many problems with insects, since so plants drive away insects.
We live in Austin, Tx and are planing to move into some inner city neighborhood to get more involved with the community. One of the things i look forward to in moving from an apartment to a house with a yard, is the possibility of having a garden. To grow my own food, but with that idea came the idea of setting up a neighborhood garden and teaching others what we can do to cut back on chemicals and how to grow and use whats in season. Just having a garden focused on food should cut down on a lot of grocery bills, increase healthier eating practices, and grow community relationships.
