I adore this piece of advice.
context: how to break emergency/crisis news.
Advice: "Keep your message short. Many people have short attention
spans."
Explanation: If the message is online, consider also that many people have a hard time reading text-heavy doc**ents on computer screens. I have 2020 vision, and I have difficulty. Difficulty concentrating because of my eyes. My cognitive powers are are going 'come on' to my sore eyes!
Sometimes, of course, you have a a lot of information to deliver. In such a case, use paragraphs. (A useful tidbit of advice for evoke blogging in general, I think.) And don't use big fat paragraphs. You really don't need them. You don't - no matter how dense your data set is, no matter how smart and tight and important the train of thought is.
Bottom line, you write for the reader. And the reader is better off with concision and friendly little paragraphs. Get your important words to more people - including the short of attention and the sore of eye! That's my take, anyway.
Afterthought: I love this piece of advice for another reason. It reminds us of the physicality of writing. Clear thinking and semantic expression are not enough. Good writing requires attending to the physical medium of the communication.
Sincerely,
Jerry
