I have chosen the following secret to social innovation:
Provide skills, not just finished technologies. The current revolution in design for developing countries is the notion of co-creation, of teaching the skills necessary to create the solution, rather than simply providing the solution. By involving the community throughout the design process, you can help equip people to innovate and contribute to the evolution of the product. Furthermore, they acquire the skills needed to create solutions to a much wider variety of problems. They are empowered.
I believe this secret could help me change the world because it's about capacity building & creating meaningful change. Solutions to many of the most pressing problems comes from those experiencing its effects directly. The practice of co-creating a solution is powerful because it recognises the innate creativity and power of experiential knowledge. Anything from incremental improvements to full-blown transformation can emerge from people with first-hand experience of a particular problem. Co-creation also takes local context - cultural, economic and political - into consideration to create more meaningful solutions that have been collaboratively developed by the community in question.
