A crash course in changing the world.
Every wednesday, I partake in a student council meeting at my school. Our student council has several goals. We raise money for The Rural Education Fund associated with our sister school Rishi Valley in India, for Invisible Children and for our own school events such as prom and showcase. Every year we raise 1,000 dollars for The Rural Education Fund, which is given by seniors during their month-long India trip. The Rural Education Fund uses the School in a Box system, which is made to connect learning to Indian's local surroundings rather than the objects of a Western environment. This "Community-based curriculum is taught by village youth and framed in the local context. The curriculum is integrated with activities aimed to promote conservation, and sustain local culture". This education system is made of graded cards, which break down the learning process into smaller units. The system uses a pictorial achievement ladder and gives a "sequential organization to what are essentially self-learning materials". Students may work and learn at their own pace and are allowed to choose cards which are an appropriate level for them. "Student absenteeism is not a problem in our schools because a student is able to simply take up where he or she had left off on returning to school after a period of absence".
Every year our student council raises 1,000 dollars for The Rural Education Fund. This is how I am helping empower women with a better education. Although for both genders, School in a Box stresses educating women, and most participants are female. To raise this money, our student council holds yard sales, bake sales and other money raising benefits to help. I am excited to go to India when I'm a senior, to meet the people I am helping and to experience a new country.
