Poverty is the main cause of hunger. In Toronto, where I live, the economic situation has caused food bank visits to increase dramatically. The median hourly wage of the population of Toronto in 2009 was $10.90, and 20 hours a week. There are people who are in dire straits, with much worse problems then we have here in Toronto, but we must take care of our community, and hopefully gain insight into how to solve these problems overseas as well.
The Stop is a Toronto based community food centre, with an emphasis on healthy, sustainable food, community building, and challenging inequality.
What is so incredible about the stop, is how they build a community around healthy eating. Food is an important aspect of what they do, and the skills they teach are indispensable; but at the same time, their programs help to create bonds and friendships that count for so much more.
I plan on volunteering for the stop as soon as possible!! I'm currently only working about 20 hours a week, so i have lots of time to commit to such an incredible organization.
