There is no one "secret" to social innovation, but a combination of ingredients can create the right attitude.
Becoming a social innovator means taking a step back to see the bigger picture, while zeroing in on concrete challenges at the same time. It means listening to the people who matter in what we are trying to achieve, it means piecing together what we already have in new ways, it means thinking creatively - and thoroughly - about what could go wrong on the way to doing things right.
Openness to new information, willingness to experiment (even if it means failing), and a drive to serve something larger than ourselves are key ingredients, without which social innovators will fail. What we achieve in this realm is not about what YOU have done, but about what you are able to co-create with others that has lasting value.
We must train ourselves to see the world as a collection of abundant possibilities, and look at what we have (not what we lack) as the foundations upon which to build, stand, and shine.
