A crash course in changing the world.
On May 4, 2011, UN officials stressed the need for participation of women in democracies and decision making. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon states that "while women’s political participation improves democracy, the reverse is also true: democracy is an incubator for gender equality". Female participation in democracy will provide "public space for discussion and women's empowerment', "enable women's groups to mobilize and help women "realize their political, civil , economic and social rights". Few countries have women in government, but more are progressively joining. The UN states that gender equality must be a direct goal, rather than a side goal of democracy. UN departments have expanded democracy-building and are employing more women.
The place of women in government is very important in my opinion. As many know, women can multi-task and generally take the time to critically think and make better decisions, an ability that many men lack. Especially when one has a vast amount of conflicts and topics to deal with, multi-tasking is a very important skill. The U.S. has seen more women getting into government, an example would be Hillary Clinton as secretary of State. I believe the addition of women to government will be greatly beneficial and it is slowly happening, with the rise of many women's rights and UN Women.
