Without understanding we as innovators have nothing. Without understanding we are unable to fully realize what the root problem is in order to even think about a solution or perhaps innovation.
"Innovation comes from constraint."This statement has an enormous amount of merit. In order to realize a situation's constraints we must fully understand not only our resources but our "anit-resources"; the resources a culture chooses to not take "advantage" of for one reason or another. For example, (Ethan Zuckerman's #2):
"Don’t fight culture (If people cook by stirring their stews, they’re not going to use a solar oven, no matter what you do to market it. Make them a better stove instead.)
By understanding this principle we can begin to look towards ideas which focus on the resources which are available; such as materials, skills, art, culture, etc.
Because total understanding is so important, solutions or "innovations" rarely completely resolve an issue. But as a wh***, we each just need to fully understand a component of the issue and come together for a correct and lasting innovation.
