It's my belief that we should be understanding then creative. If we look at the term "open minded" in a couple senses then we can see that this is key.
Firstly, we have to open our minds to understanding the problem and understanding WHY it is a problem. Difficulty appears when an innovator is impeded by his or her own view of the situation and how it affects the people directly involved. Being understanding and thoughtful is essential. And I mean thoughtful in the cognitive sense of the word, however the word generally has compassionate connotations and this is also very beneficial.
Also, we have to be open minded with our solutions. As in, thinking expansively. The solution is out there it just hasn't been thought of and applied yet. Hold on to that understanding of the situation and use creativity and imagination to be deductive and innovative.
This is the core of a problem solver, and the formula for ingenuity.
