In 1992, a jury's ruling on the Rodney King case sparked 6 days of riots in Los Angeles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riotsWhile racial tensions are not at the same level they were then, there are other stresses on Los Angeles society. Economic stresses are high, and the state of California has major funding problems that are impacting government services. This also means that in the event of a riot or other major crisis, underfunded government services and organizations will have a harder time responding.
In the event of riots or other outbreaks of violence in Los Angeles, Ushahidi could be a hugely useful tool. It could track incidents of violence, show which neighborhoods are the most dangerous or need the most help. It could also allow tracking of infrastructure damage or blockage as a result of the riots or responses to them (i.e. if certain streets are shut down, power grids are damaged, fire outbreaks, etc.)
Resources that should be tracked and shared could involve safe shelters, violence-free neighborhoods, medical aid, transportation, and possibly food and water depending on the length of the riots and damage done.
