Ushahidi and School Violence
The school that I attend in Boston MA, is a very friendly and peaceful--it is hard to image that anything like what happened at Columbine is even remotely possible. However, it is always better to be over prepared.
I could see Ushahidi being used to inform students of possible threats in a crisis situation. Imagine if during Columbine, students were able to inform each other and the police where the attackers where, many more lives would have been saved.
...this isn't a bad idea, does anyone know if users can suggest possible uses for Ushahidi?

Using it in a school situation is a great idea. I hadn't even thought of that! Like other open source software, maybe they can market an education version.

Yes it would be very useful for emergencies but also for daily life. That would make everyone familiar with Ushahidi so in case of an emergency it wouldn´t be something foreign.

Now the difficulty with a program like Ushahidi being used with schools is that it requires a map. MIT would be a good school to start this with because of this. My school MassArt, is a jumbled mess of buildings and for Ushahidi to be successful it would require what Nathaniel and Patricio are talking about. Students would have to be familiar to the site and how it functions so that during an emergency they wouldn't have the struggle with the usability. I am actually in touch with a couple people at MIT and I am going to suggest this idea to them.

well, since it is now a historical event you can't. One can however plan for similar events that might happen in the future. By providing emergency response capabilities to students many lives could be saved if students knew where not to go.

Columbine-like events happen. There's very little you can do to prepare for it. Teaching and practicing emergency procedures, etc would help.
Should we not just aim for prevention? Why did these kids decide that it was right for them to shoot up their classmates, how did they get access to the weapons, and what signs did we miss? By adding more security to schools, we are only take away from their freedoms. It leads to more angst.

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal.
