A crash course in changing the world.
I am grown up in Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. The most accurate social problem in the region is the ethnical conflicts between the Han people (ethnic chinese) and Uyghurs. One biggest riot happened on 5 July 2009 in Urumqi, as a protest of over 1000 Uyghurs escalated into violent attack that mainly targeted on Han people, which led to death of at least 200 people and over 1000 injuries as well as destroyed vehicles and buildings. Innocent people on the street were stabbed and chopped with knives, cars were stopped with roadblocks and then smashed up. That was absolutely the most horrible memory of Urumqi in recent years.
As a platform of real time crowdsource, Ushahidi can really save lives when this kind of bloody unrest may occur again. People can share informations to warn the other people to stay at home, not to drive to the places where the roads are blocked or where the rioters gathered. Residents in the neighborhood who are willing to provide their home as shelter could also use the Ushahidi to make their help heard. Also the police can use the information and make decisions of allocation in a much more sufficient way. Since there were a large number of rioters, it was at that time hard to find criminal evidence afterwards. With Ushahidi gathering photos and videos taken by residents inside of the building through windows, it would also accelerate the arrest process.
