A crash course in changing the world.

Using what I've learned here in the real world...IMMEDIATELY :)

I have had a great time collaborating and learning from everyone on the site, and decided to keep it going when I got to work today. I work in an office with people from a few different countries, so this worked really well for my office. So here's what I did.

1. Everyone drew a map of the state or province they are from
2. We then filled in every city, landmark, fact, etc we could think of about that state or anything we drew in that state.
3. We exchanged maps with someone who was from somewhere else, and we all checked the facts on the map, giving 1 point for each fact. This in itself was fun because we began negotiating between us how close you needed to be for each type of fact to get a point. At first people wanted to be strict, but then realized the power of the community, in that if they were strict in some instances, they were likely to have one of their points taken away...so in the end everyone ended up concluding that it was better to show good will, and thus if you were close you most likely were going to get your point.
4. So at the end, we added up the points, and the winner ended up being some guy from Texas...ME! heheh

Anyways, it was fun, and everyone learned a little about someplace else, and it got people talking to one another about things that they found on each other's maps.

I encourage you all to try this and post how it went...what did you learn from this that you didn't know?

I learned there is a Big Nickel in Ontario....that the Ontario and Eerie Lakes are cut in 1/2 to share with the United States, and while I knew that factually, I really looked at what that meant when I was using Google Maps to check all of my colleagues facts.

Anyways, what other ways can we use this type of quick collaborative exercise in real life?

*Update*

It occured to me that some people might be interested in the results:

Most of the people in the office are from Canda but here were the rankings:
1. United States - 19 facts on Texas
2. Canada - 18 facts on Ontario
3. Ukraine - 10 facts on Ukraine
4. China - 0 facts on Shanghai....China and Taiwan were drawn...and on top of that, they wanted to use GOOGLE to fill in the details...after telling us that Google had left China! I thought it was rather ironic...

That's pretty clever. If I still worked in an office environment, I'd probably do this today. Reading your post, however, reinforced in me the knowledge of just how little I know about the people I work with every day. I'm going to have to come up with some verbal version of this game, and the means to get everyone involved. BZ

That is an interesting game! I also don't work in an office (I work from home), but I might try it the next time I'm at a meeting or gathering.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
