Things I have uncovered about Vancouver’s resilience strategies:
Vancouver held a
‘Resilient Cities’ summit last year while I was away…would’ve really liked to go! And another
symposium I missed at UBC...
Then I found and read a couple of interesting .pdf’s called ‘Beyond Food Security: Urban Agriculture as a form of resilience in Vancouver, Canada’ by Mullinix, K et al. (2009) and ‘Resilient Vancouver Task Force’ by Davidson, B. (2009). These can be Googled and found, most likely. (Also see:
http://www.kwantlen.ca/ish/urban.html)
Some of the main points of the resilience strategies for Vancouver include:
-how agriculture can be used in the city to increase food security for its people, thus increasing resilience
-the impacts of peak oil/climate change on the city
-plans for building more resilient infrastructure
Some good names to Google search for more information:
-Andrea Reimer, Bill Rees, Bryn Davidson, Rick Balfour, Herb Barbolet, Rex Weyler, Jon Cooksey, & Vandy Savage
Since I am not actually in Vancouver right now, I want to ask that all Vancouverites on Evoke (who read this!) please let me know how much YOU already knew about the resilience strategies for the city, what you learned from this post, and anything extra you might have to share with me. Thanks!
