Online gaming worlds such as World of Warcraft, EVE Online, and Second Life have many people interacting in them. This interaction creates an environment of supply and demand as in the real world. While Blizzard bans gold selling in World of Warcraft, Linden Labs allows and even facilitates exchanges between dollars and their online currency, the linden.
Transactions with the linden are limited to Second Life servers. Essentially, they are centralized. Having a game world that is non-centralized much like the World Wide Web might require something different as currency. Will people use e-gold or will there be a new encrypted form of currency based on some new mathematical model? I can envision whatever form of currency that becomes the online standard also becoming the real-world standard.
As a side note, I also like the idea of the currency containing intrinsic value. Stored power is a great idea, but energy in batteries degrade over time.
