A crash course in changing the world.
I can't believe 10 years have already passed since I started my first greenhouse. It is March 2020 and I am sitting on the porch at my farm having a baraza (meeting) with my neighbours who are fellow farmers.
Just 10 years ago we did not know each other. Now we are not just neighbours, we are also friends living true to the african proverb "to go quickly go alone, to go far go together".
We came together 10 years ago to share ideas on how we can work together to discuss how much the city was encroaching onto our farmlands due to rapid growth of urban population. Many of our neighbours had already sold thier property much of which was being converted to shopping malls and apartment blocks i.e more people, less green spaces.
We mapped out a "rules of engagement" for those of us who had been left standing. 10 years later we are drinking freshly squeezed passon fruit juice with a lovely garden salad. We have set up drip irrigated greenhouses where we grow tomatoes, colored bell peppers, sweet melon, lettuce, passion fruit and various herbs. We use water harvesting techniques and organic manure. 7 years ago, we started fish farming and now grow tilapia and trout. We sell our produce at farmers markets nationwide.
We have "gone far together" and when Alchemy calls, this baraza is ready to help Tokyo tackle its food crisis.
