A crash course in changing the world.
In New Zealand natural disasters are something that we are always preparing for. Being located virtually on top of the ring of fire of the Pacific, with the tectonic plates either pulling or pushing, it is like New Zealand is sitting on top of a war zone happening deep beneath the earth's layers. We have one of the best systems in the world to monitor natural disasters but mother nature still has the power to catch us by surprise.
In the Waikato where I live there are multiple natural hazards. We are at risk of floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand is a small country and any of these happening would affect most areas nearby. Saying this, the Waikato is one of the safest parts of New Zealand and we would most likely not get the full force of these hazards (although still be affected nontheless).
I think that with the Wellington earthquake so overdue (and the fact it would affect the wh*** country) I will look at earthquakes and how Ushahidi could help in the Waikato, as well as the wh*** of New Zealand.
Data we could track would include road damage, building damage, cracks in the landscape. The main thing we would need to sort out is accessibilty. We would need shelter, food and medical resources to collect and share. Power would be out and water/waste systems ruined.
With many parts of New Zealand being quite isolated - an emergency communicator like Ushahidi would be a large help. In the Waikato alone there are many small towns located throughout and communication between them would be very difficult.
