The organization, "World.org," has a vision where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease, which is the key problem in countries such as Haiti, Ghana and Ethiopia.
Children and adults do not have access to adequate sanitation -- there is one toilet for every five. It is said that half of the people in Haiti lack access to clean water and only one in five have access to a sanitary toilet.
In 2009, Water.org announced their commitment to reach at least 50,000 Haitians (during the Clinton Annual Global Initiative Meeting) with clean water and sanitation over the next three years. The plan is to bring an array of solutions to fix the problem in Haiti.
Solutions to the water problems will depend on the conditions apparent and recommendations to be made through analysis of the situations.Water.org will a****s the conditions and determine the best practice and sanitation solutions through their appraisals, as well as market research.
Some of their objectives to bring clean water and increase sanitation services in Haiti are:
- Increase the level of access to sustainable, safe water and sanitation services for 50,000 people among poor and vulnerable populations.
-Decrease the prevalence of water and sanitation-related diseases in the target areas.
- Increase awareness of good hygiene practices.
- Measure the demand for credit-based water-supply and sanitation solutions at the community level in the target areas.
Here's one situation: The Klabedjin well has been broken for about two years now, so people have had to find another way to get water. People here dig a h*** until they reach water and then cement a lid over it. Nearly every family in this area has a well like this in their yard. According to several area residents, people use this water for everything, such as washing dishes, clothes, etc. but it is not potable. To collect water, people tie a cord to a bucket handle and lower it into the well.
As of 2010, they begun certification, beginning with one partner organization. Haiti Outreach, during the week of the January 12 earthquake, and they are in the process of certifying additional partners. They have begun working with Haiti Outreach on the program design with the objective of launching the first program as of April 2010. This is done through first, choosing a community to support; second, each week, you will receive updates on their progress of work going on in that community; third, you, the giver support the cause to make a difference in the lives of those communities.
For the community of Klabedjin, as of February 2011, Community members wrote a letter to request a well project and the local government representative signed the letter before it was submitted to the Haiti Outreach. Haiti Outreach field staff meets with requesting community. The final outcome are working, operational wells.
