A crash course in changing the world.
I must say before I continue with this blog post, I knew clean water was an issue. I knew it was a serious issue in many parts of the world, but I did not actually know how large the issue was and still is. I checked out the link "water for people" to find out more information on what people are doing to help solve this problem. Basically the organization started out in the 1980's and was founded by the former president of the American Water Works Association and some of his other colleagues. Their goal was to help acheive the vision of a world where all people have access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and basic health services. It was in 1991 when Water For People finally became a 501(c)(3) international nonprofit organization. Here is a quote from their website that explains their recent activity, "In 2007, Water For People provided more than 108,000 beneficiaries with safe drinking water resources and/or improved sanitation facilities. In 2008 we provided over 184,000 beneficiaries with the same. That number grew again in 2009 to over 325,000." Water For People helps nations like Malawi where almost all latrine facilities are traditional pit latrines. The majority of the latrines just h***s in the ground and are not adequate enough to prevent fecal-oral disease transmission. Most major agencies in Malawi estimate that rural sanitation coverage is at 30% or less.
