I was impressed with the approach taken by the Water for People organization, as described on their website.
Their solutions include all the aspects that I consider essential: they use local resources, personnel, locally sustainable technology, help to build local infrastructure, and involve local businesses and governments. Without any one of these aspects, no overseas aid solution can truly be sustainable, and worse, can actually harm the local infrastructures through unfair or temporary competition, etc...
This group uses technologies such as the previously mentioned PlayPump, but only in such cases as it is deemed appropriate; it doesn't just try to implement a cookie-cutter solution to scenarios that may be vastly different in terms of their resources, both physical and human.
There may "well" be other organizations also doing it right, but I was suitably awed by this company's attention to all the right details.
I would certainly not hesitate to support them, either directly or indirectly.
