A crash course in changing the world.
Please have a look at my new Evidence, Water use in Canada’s oil sands!
The industry realizes that the amount of water required to produce oil from Alberta’s oil sands, are important and that water resources have to be managed with care. Please have a look at: http://www.capp.ca/getdoc.aspx?DocId=154986&DT=NTV
Main points:
Even with forecast oil sands growth, the Athabasca, Peace and Beaver River basins remain among the least utilized river basins in Alberta,
By 2020, the in situ oils sands industry is forecast to produce almost 40 % of Canada’s total crude oil but will require less than 0.5 % of Alberta’s current water allocation,
More than half of the water currently used by in situ oil sands is saline water from deep underground zones which is not suitable for human or agricultural use,
Oil sands projects recycle 80 – 95 % of water used,
The industry will continue to reduce the amount of fresh water required per barrel of production by improving water recycle rates, using non-potable water sources where feasible, and by developing new technologies.
Some solutions already exist, even if only for a portion of the problem.
I will be back later with more ideas to help reducing the negative impacts of peak oil!
