http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/01/a_bicycle_that.phpThe above link is to an article and video about a fascinating piece of tech that I was told about a while back.
Whether in times of disaster or in areas of the world with poor water/sanitation access, people often have to travel significant distances for water. After the time and effort in getting the water, it needs to be boiled or otherwise treated to ensure it is drinkable, wasting resources that could be put to better use.
This invention is a bicycle with a built in water filter that works as it is pedaled. In other words, a person can ride to the water source, fill up the tank on the bike, ride back,
and be making their water drinkable as they do so! The tank hold 20 gallons of water (the daily amount needed for a family of four). When not used for transport, the water filter can still be operated by pedal power with the bike kept stationary. It is at once an energy efficient and eco-friendly form of transport that also provides a necessary resource to those in need of clean water.
