A crash course in changing the world.
After reading the excellent blog-post entitled, "Tips on Innovations in Africa" I would like to summarize my learning as follows:
Sharing is caring is empathizing is participating is empowering is innovating is sustaining livelihood.
To be successful as a change agent, we should not try to substitute; rather we should try to supplement within existing the socio-cultural fabric of our action domain. Further I would like to add from my experience of working with some poorest of poor farmers in plateau region of eastern India that empowering through skill development is more important. Also capacity building is important but follow up is more important.
Some of our friends in their blogs have raised question about funding (money). Now no bank in the world is going to fund a person living with $2/day. For this, microfinance is a proven economic technology. However, to me, microfinance is again build on trust which is having its foundation on sharing and caring.
Being positive is very important--I was reminded about the story of a frog in the well. Every day the frog tried to go out of the well. Other frogs and animals in the well as well as those outside the well used to tell him that he should not try and that he will fall. However, he kept on trying and ultimately on one day could come out of the well. The other frogs and animals repeatedly asked him how he could make it. But the frog gave no answer. They kept on asking until they came to know that the frog was actually deaf. So we need to be positive and in most often than not should ignore the negative sermons like the deaf frog.
However, the above story is not to put forth an idea that we should crash ideas that are dissent. We must remember that everybody in the society is important-- while optimists created aeroplane the pessimists created the parachute.
