A crash course in changing the world.

Where are You From? Tell me about your town.

Hi everyone, this might serve as a cool kind of discussion where people
can visit and see what some of the evokers wrote about where they are
from. This might help see some of your ideas and how you came about
them. I guess I will start.

I come from a small city in North Western Ontario called Thunder Bay. It lies on the largest fresh water
lake in North America, Lake Superior. We have a famous landmark called
"The Sleeping Giant" It is an island that from our vantage point in the
city looks like, yes a sleeping Giant. Also know as Nanabijou, the
native american term for it. Legend has it that it lies on a silver mine
that it was supposed to protect. It is a very isolated city with lots
of wildlife around it, you can do many things minutes from the city,
such as fishing, hiking, camping, anything you can think of that is
outdoorsy. Many of us have cottages or camps that we retreat to on
weekends and holidays to get a bit of nature in us. In my home town I
attend Lakehead University, a small and fairly new University that has a
newly built Paleontology lab that has been featured on David Suzuki's
"the nature of things". All in all, this quaint town is not a bad place
to live if you like nature and simple things. For many younger people,
this is not the ideal location. I do not mind it, but industry has
dwindled and jobs are scarce. Many are almost forced to move away just
to find jobs. It is a sad reality, but the town heavily relied on
forestry and paper industries to sustain it, and those took a huge hit. I
was also able to work a summer at the Power Generation Station, it is a
coal burning plant which, due to a new environmental law, has stopped
running. However, it is currently under going a conversion to Bio Mass
burning wood pellets.

Please tell me about where you come from, I would love to hear about it.

Hi Marc! Normally I wouldn't say Windsor Ontario is near Thunder Bay, but in a global context it certainly is! I too am from a city that is trying to make a change from an older economy although we are surrounded by farmland instead of forest. Did you see or take part in TVO's AgendaCamp when it came to Thunder Bay? I watched that show with much interest.

And thanks for trying to connect the Evoke Network more tightly!

Born and raised in the USA and I am currently serving my second tour of Duty aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. I moved north to escape the "Base Life" and now reside in Murrieta, CA small town considering I came from Orlando, Florida and then to San Diego, California. We are a modest 100,000 population and it is predominatley families as there isn't much of a college around. Suits me beautifully.

Not much a community though. I wish i knew more ways to get involved and welcome any suggestions. I promise I wont take your words lightly and may even post a video about it.

I've lived in a lot of places (Claremont, CA, Arlington, VA, Atlanta, GA, Philadelphia, PA) but the place where I grew up and my current abode is in Edina, MN. Took a number of trips up to Duluth and Madeline Island when I was a kid, so I'm definitely familiar with Lake Superior!

Edina is a pretty boring Twin Cities suburb full of rich, mostly-white people. The only thing that's impressed me about Edina is people's willingness to be active in their kids' education. Most of the people here could probably afford to send their kids to private school; in other places in the country, they probably would. Yet most of them don't. Instead, they fund educational levies and pay attention to school matters which have made Edina's public schools some of the best in the US. It's nice to see even suburbanites collaborate like activists.

Thanks for the responses so far everyone!

MIta, no I didn't get a chance to see or par take in that.

Sean, it is still really sunny and I don't notice the smog really, Are your coal burning plants being converted to Bio Fuel as well?

Joseph, my mom moved to Tampa Florida 2 years ago, I have only visited once but really enjoyed it.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
