I gotta be honest here... I've been lucky. Perhaps my family was never a millionair and it's true there are LOTS of things I haven´t been able to do because I lack the money, but let's face it. I've always had food on my table and a roof over my head. I've had the opportunity to study in great schools and thanks to that I'm able to live a very confortable life... yet one of my main objective in life is to help improve the world in any way. That's why I choose what I studied, that's why I quited a good safe job to take a riskier one, that's why I wake up every morning and give my best in the non-profit where I work.
How did this started? I have it very clear, it was because of someone. His name is
Craig Kielburger and even if he doesn´t really know me... he changed my life!
It was in the late 1999, I was in high school and Craig went to my school to give a talk. Saying that he's inspiring is very little! He's less than a month older than me, yet he already founded
Free the Children, a world wide organization of young people working to end children labor. I remember clearly that as we walked away from the conference room after hearing him, my friends and I decided to do something!
That was the moment when I started to care about improving the world, and that's the moment when I decided what to do with the rest of my life. It took time to really accepting it, but by the time I finish high school and had to choose a career, it was clear I wanted to study something to improve the world. Now, 10 years later, I'm still working to improve the world on a more than full time basis (and I love it!).
To be honest, Craig is my biggest hero... I've read two of his books and cried several times in each, not because there were sad stories there, in fact, he always talks about how hope arises even in the worst situations. What was really touchy to me, is to find how small actions make a huge impact. Heroes now days don´t need to have super strength or laser eyes, just being able to say the right words at the right time can change someone's life and make you his/her Hero. Craig did that to me in less than 2hrs. That talk might be little for him (as he gives talks all the time everywhere around the world!), but so far that talk has defined 10 years of my life, and I know what changed inside of me in those 2hrs will last for many years more.
