I have read several other suggestions for the future celebration of World Water Day, and am sad to say that I'm somewhat disappointed.
With the entire point of the day being to bring awareness to those people in parts of the world _without_ adequate clean water or plumbing, I was astonished to read so many posts describing lavish activities all centred around using water in essentially wasteful, frivolous ways, basically for entertainment purposes. This would send exactly the opposite message, that water is plentiful and to be taken for granted.
This is wrong.
My World Water Day would indeed be an event that hits home the proper message.
First, participants wanting to be officially involved would purchase a t-shirt or sweater or hat, business tie, even armband, rubber bracelet or other article of clothing officially sanctioned from a local provider, with proceeds going to a water conservation organization. Corporate challenges, sponsorships, etc... can both increase awareness as well as raise money for the cause.
Next, wearing some sign of their commitment so that anyone who sees them can easily identify participants, the participants spend 12 hours without drinking any liquid of any kind. For the purpose of the corporate challenges, stakes and sponsorships could include not using the toilet for the same period, with designated proctors.
This activity would actually make people aware of the plight of those in need, and would certainly be no more physically "appropriate" or challenging than a sponsored/charity marathon or "iron man" competition.
It's drastic, yes.
It's scalable, yes.
It's got the potential to be a huge media event, yes.
It's necessary.
Yes.
