Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I picked Yared Fubusa as one of my Evoke Heroes as has founded the Gombe School of Environment and Society. This school is focused on improving
conditions for people and wildlife. He is achieving this through community education programs that promote self-reliance, economic and cultural vitality as well as human health and peace. Yared is an Ashoka Fellow (nominated in 2008) and he is making the educational experience of rural Tanzanians relevant
to the situations in which they live, which is not always the case in the curricula used in Africa. The current widespread curricula fail to create productive members of society by giving them skills and knowledge they need to contribute to their local communities. The education system, much of it imported from colonists, is not suited to the local needs. Yared's approach directly addresses that need.

Per the Ashoka site:
Yared has developed a multi-dimensional program that generates income for the school and the local community. A profitable demonstration farm, a study-abroad program, and programs in wildlife and cultural
tourism, employ rural Tanzanians and the programs’ profits support a
residential secondary school and conservation outreach programs. The
programs are embraced and sustained by community members and
international clients. Yared believes the long-term viability of human
habitation in the region requires careful consideration of the local
community and environment, with an emphasis on education and economic
viability.
