Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

You DO NOT have the right to water....

Did I catch you attention? This statement is true, although the human body is about 60%
water, none of us have the official right to it for granted.

I feel really involved in the crusade of getting water and sanitation the status of fundamental human right (which does not necessarily mean for FREE) before the 6th World Water Forum in 2012.

The reason is that as fresh water sources diminish due to climate change, the menace of privatising water is one of many aspects of the water crisis to pay attention to.

Please check this article about last year’s World Water Forum (WWF):

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/feature/privatising-water-is-denying-people-a-human-right-un-president_100169052.html

United Nations already consider water is a human right, and they are working hard to implement this conscience in developing countries:

http://www.wateraid.org/uk/what_we_do/policy_and_research/the_right...

...... Although I believe that something similar should be practiced in developed countries where water is being wasted. For instance, in my city (Gijon-Spain) over 75% of the potable water that runs
inside street pipes is lost in the way to the taps, this is due to poor maintenance!

Back to the subject, you can meet the woman who has been appointed to carry over the work of producing a report that will allow the High Commissioner of Human Rights Council to reach to a decision in 2011. Which means that weather water & sanitation will be awarded the status of human rights:

http://www2.ohchr.org/english/issues/water/iexpert/Ind_expert_DeAlbuquerque.htm

By the way, the president of Bolivia (my homeland) is also part of the crusade as you can realize from this video:

http://english.ntdtv.com/ntdtv_en/ns_sa/2010-03-23/306265251214.html

Now, in order to lend a hand, I´ve been spreading the word that the Independent Expert needs the input from NGOs that work providing water or managing water supplies. It is a questionnaire that can be downloaded from this link:

http://www2.ohchr.org/english/issues/water/iexpert/

The “good practices questionnaire” is Available in English, Spanish and French. It is not for private people is it is for institutions such as States, regional and municipal authorities, public and private providers, regulators, civil society organisations, the private sector, national human rights institutions, bilateral development agencies, and international organisations.

I am sending it to public bodies in Spain and also in Bolivia. The deadline to
submit the questionnaire is next 30th of June.

THEREFORE I REQUEST YOUR HELP

Please if you work for or have contacts in such organisations help me out with this.

In order to make it easier for you I wrote a standard message below:

“Dear Sirs,

The Independent Expert on the issue of human rights obligations related to access
to safe drinking water and sanitation, Ms. Catarina de Albuquerque, has been
mandated by the Human Rights Council in 2008 to:

· Further clarify the content of human rights obligations related to access to safe drinking water and sanitation;

· Make recommendations that could help the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), and particularly of
the Goal 7;

· Prepare a compendium of good practices related to access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

While the work of human rights bodies has often focused on the violations of human rights, the Independent Expert welcomes the opportunity to identify good practices that address the question of how human rights obligations related to sanitation and water can be implemented.

Your experiences with good practices in water and sanitation constitute very important information for the Independent Expert’s work on this issue, and also help to raise awareness about the many different, creative approaches to ensuring human rights as they relate to water and sanitation. Please fill out the questionnaire and return it to the Independent Expert as soon as possible, or by 30 June 2010.

“The Good Practices Questionnaire” can be downloaded from:

http://www2.ohchr.org/english/issues/water/iexpert/

Or be requested to Dr. TR Rojas at ternuros@gmail.com

Questionnaires can be transmitted electronically to iewater@ohchr.org (encouraged) or be addressed to

Independent Expert on the issue of human rights obligations related to access to safe
drinking water and sanitation.

Hi, thanks for the quote. I am not implying that public services work better. I am not against water privatization. Just believe that children and sensible population should be protected from greed. Did you know that women in Africa have to trade sex for drinking water? Something at a higher level has to prevent what governments are not able to fight against. Willing to hear more form you. T

+1 Courage. I posted a graph titled Water Price Comparison on World Water Day last week. Please check it out.

This seems really, really useful and important, but I'm kind of confused. Who do you think we should send this to? And what, specifically, do you think we should ask them to focus on?

I'm also asking, for my own action on this week's mission, what does it mean for water to be clean. And your action might help us answer that question.

Hi, Turil. If you work for a city council, a water treatment plant, a NGO that works managing drinking water or if you work for a Huge private company that treats and sells water, this questionnaire is for them.

Clean safe water is fresh water that is properly puryfied or treated AND complies with WHO standards, check: http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/en/
I am interested to see what "clean water" means from your phylosophic point of view! Cheers, T

Not true statement, not ever, not not now. We have right to have every essential needs. I like your ideas but I am against your Topic.
Comment by Ternura Rojas on March 29, 2010 at 7:56pm
Thank you for your point of view,
This is not an idea of mine. Your comment was the initial answer from UN´s Human Rights High Comissioner back in 2002. Then many, many many people and institutions all around the world learned out that it was actually necessary to specify the right to water and sanitation independently from article number 3 "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person" as current UDHR states.
When you state that we have the right to every essential, and there´s no need to this right to be acknowledged you are also suggesting that EVERY child on this earth has actual access to education, healthcare, safety & enough water and food. You might be implying that no child on earth suffers slavery or sexual abuse because they have their rights.
At least those children´s rights are specifyed and we can disscuss them, but when rights are not specified there is no way to prosecute someone for breaching them. Now do you share my view?
Comment by Turil Cronburg on March 29, 2010 at 10:35pm
I think Koshy's point is that you do indeed have the right to water. It's just that that right is not universally recognize, or written into law. But as far as I'm concerned, you definitely have a right to water, no matter who you are, plant, animal, fungus, or whatever creature you might be. :-)

Hi Ternura, A lot of great information and you are right in your last comment about differences between what we put as 'Rights' and the people's reality. I must ask though what you really think the effect will be? Unfortunately I can't help in your efforts as my only direct contact with someone helping water and sanitation is WaterAid a International helping Organisation to make it available. I would love what we have as a right to become a reality and would love to work on a further project with you one day to make this happen. Not sure a letter or questionnaire no matter how formal going to spark change. You need media, pressure to orgs and governments and active involvement and time from local people to make change, especially in this area.in many places..especially for example Africa.Hope you see my point thanks for sharing all this great links to information though. +1 knowledge share.

Hi all! Radika: WaterAid is an active part of the "right to water & sanitation" project, Nonetheless could you please find out if they already filled in and submitted the questionnaire? (I am almost sure they did). You know I count on you when the time for alliances start ;-) and you please count on me.
Turil, thanks for stopping by again. I think you both meant all creatures have "access" to water, otherwise they would be dead, I completely agree.
"The right to water" in this case means to guarantee that this water will be safe instead of killing our children and contaminating our plants. The greatest amount of deaths on this world is because of unsafe water, even more than car crashes, plain accidents, drug overdose, AIDS, work casualties, war........you name it. So, I think I am ready to check your action for mission 4 ;-)

Hi Agent T,

I have sent the questionnaire to an organization I know in the Phillipines for them to fill in.
My blog post about it is here:

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
