You don't have to be a scientist to save the environment!
What are YOU doing to save the environment?
This is a question I find myself pondering quite often. What am I doing to help save our beautiful planet? I think everyone needs to take a look at the impact we are having on the planet Earth. After doing some research for the past few months, I found that there are many ways that average people like you and I can make sure our children have the chance to live in and admire the beautiful world we live in.
I personally have made a few changes that don't necessarily affect the quality of my life. Me and my friends carpool much more frequently than we used to or if its nearby we'll walk and enjoy the scenery. Utilizing BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) which is subway-like train system in the Bay Area also helps curb the emissions from our cars. Taking shorter showers, making sure you turn off the water while brushing your teeth, and turning on the sprinklers only 3 times a week makes a huge difference on utility bills! (A leaky faucet can waste >13 liters a day!) Also, switching to energy star appliances and energy-efficient bulbs lends a helping hand. I've noticed how much food waste we throw out and have considered starting a compost heap. We do maintain a vegetable and fruit garden in our backyard which contributes to a portion of the food we eat during the week. Another easy solution is recycling. We take our cans and plastics to a recycling center and receive money in exchange. Coffee grounds are sprinkled over the soil in our gardens for added nutrients.
These small changes can have a large effect in the long run.

There are also many institutions around the world that are working to make environmentally friendly buildings feasible and more accessible. Check out this video my brother and his girlfriend made about The California Academy of Science here in San Francisco. Its an amazing museum and just so happens to be the world's most energy efficient one to boot! I would highly recommend it as a tourist location if you ever come to visit.
Big change is like a ripple effect.It will take many small changes that will grow and work together to make a difference. That difference starts with YOU. Get the word out to your friends about EVOKE and other organizations that are fighting to make this world a better place. We are here to speak as the voice for change. I'm waiting to hear yours.

Environmental issues are near and dear to my heart, so let me know if there's anything I can do to help out. I think people also don't realize that a lot of the poverty-related issues we talk about on here are because of, or exacerbated by, environmental degradation as well.

I agree David! People don't realize that we have so many more advantages living in a first world country when it comes to adapting to a changing environment. We have the money and manpower to develop new ways of farming that can resist change. Unfortunately, not every is as privileged as we are and that is why we have to work together to help them.
