Youth Empowerment Sources and Sites - Africa and otherwise (FIrst Pass)

The question of where to go for success stories, inspiration, examples, methods in the youth empowerment arena came up on the discussion board so I decided to do a little digging around. Here are some sites, papers, and online books with that seemed promising/relevant.

Web-sites
This page has a host of links to youth led social action projects and resources for those interested in the same

This site, the International Youth Foundation has a suite of programs that all deal with the employability of African youth

Papers and abstracts

The abstract for this paper has some good tidbits from a South African case study

A slightly older article on using technology for youth empowerment

Youth development in West Africa (full paper)

Participation of youth as partners in peace in Africa (full paper)

Full (or almost full) Books through Google Books:

Youth Empowerment Case Studies. These two are great researchers (and I took several cla**** from Dr. Checkoway). I hope the link works, it is a long one, but you get the full text of the book}

Here is another anthology on youth development

This volume has checklists, etc, for actually putting a project into place, a****sing it, and carrying it forward. It is an urban context, but could be really relevant for some areas of the world.

Creating better cities with children and youth: a manual for participation

By David Driskell, Growing Up in Cities (Project)

Google Books has a lot of similar volumes. Once you get to one of these volumes then there are other suggested volumes which are also relevant.

Wow William thanks for a very valuable resource for the EVOKE network . I find that alot of people are interested in the field but they just don't know where to go and how to start. You've done a great job of digging around by providing a vast array of options that would serve as a great resource for individuals like me interested in Youth Empowerment. A +25 Evidence Award from Alchemy has been added to your point total for such resourcefulness.

Wow! Thanks. I will keep on hunting things down. I am working on how to set up an SMS network right now (on the cheap) and will report on that as soon as I have a clearer idea of how to do it. I am also trying to find an inexpensive (or free) mapping program so we can get a sense of where everyone on the EVOKE network is from in one glance. Any ideas?

Thanks for the initiative William! I know you're now aware this application has already been created but I'd still go ahead and post it on here in response to your question so other agents can take of this new feature.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
