Hi Turil,

Cold is definitely bad, and broken glass can be a pain too. But on the other hand, your feet evolved over millions of years to deal with sharp sticks under the snow. You may be surprised at how resilient you become with a little practise.
Part of the joy of walking barefool is that you also become more aware of where you're walking. You learn to think about each step, to respond to the surface you're walking on. I suggest learning Taiji too, but only if you can find a teacher that focuses on body mechanics instead of all that chi hocus pocus. Getting things out of line is veeery damaging, as my knees will testify.

All the same, there are times when you need something on your feet. How about a pair of moccasins? I guess they're traditionally made from skin, but you may be able to find something made out of oil-derived products instead. I seem to remember my mother having a pair of moccasins a million years ago and the leather soles became very smooth and slippery with use, so synthetics are probably better from a purely practical point of view.

Soooo.... instead of helping people buy a pair of Reeboks, is anyone publishing plans for how to set up moccasin production facilities in countries where people need protection from parasites? I'm so glad to hear it Sunny!…tag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-04-08:4871302:Comment:859392010-04-08T22:26:04.759ZReemahttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/ReemaS

while i completely agree that walking without shoes is actually quite healthy in terms of the physiology of the foot and lower back, i am glad that you reveal the very real danger of certain types of microbes, parasites and diseases entering through the foot.

Thank you Shakwei. Since you bring up Ethiopia, I'll just say, that is where podoconiosis is extremely prevalent.

Maybe something like this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Duct_Tape_Shoes/
It doesn't quite emulate being barefoot, but I'm sure it's a lot closer than most conventional shoes.

No problem, maybe you can use the design as a model. I wonder if anyone has tried making duct tape shoes....or mold something out of milk containers or the like...*shrug*

Good luck. Let us know what you come up with!
