Great post. I think the "broken windows" theory can be applied to so much in a development context. Getting schools for instance to focus first on cleaning up their grounds and fix windows -- low cost actions that instill pride and a sense that the community cares -- can have a tangible impact on attitudes to learning. Its also interesting to note that Five Burgers -- a very successful restaurant franchise focuses on clean toilets in their franchises as a key success indicator....

PJE-- I love the idea of smiling and laughing faces on the speed monitors! I wish they'd adopt that in more places!

Yumna-- Very interesting link, thank you! I found a link that explains a little more about Original Play, but I wish I could find some in depth articles.
Shakwei and Jeremy-- thank you both! :-)

It was worth the time. Thank you! I too think that the research by psychologists has to feed through to policy and education. I liked the story about the paper twoels. In some villages around here there are little traffic faces that absolutely make me slow down. They have very unhappy faces if you are approaching too fast and turn into smiley ones when I slow down to the right speed, I'd go even slower to make them laugh! They work so much better than hidden speed cameras.
It's basic psychology, Skinner, reward works better than punishment, and contemporary neuropsychology, we have whole areas of our brains that deal with faces and none that deal with speed cameras!
