The Central Asia Institute, founded around Greg Mortenson's vision of peace through education, has at its core the realization of the girl effect -- that powerful social and economic change is brought about when girls have the opportunity to participate in their society.

It is my favorite global venture supporting women's equal rights and opportunities, though, because it isn't just focused on the effect on the economy that opportunities for women have but also the effect on the women themselves and their lives.

Though I have not yet been able to donate personally, I have been fortunate enough to have had my family as active supporters, and I hope to soon see a fundraiser talk of Mortenson's through donating myself. I have been able to share the goods news of the Central Asia Institute through twitter and facebook, but I have most enjoyed raising awareness through my writing.

I saw Ben perform this song live amidst a ~thousand people in an intimate atmosphere, and let me tell you, that was one powerful way to create a "network." The filters by which we normally separate, distance, and discriminate one another with disappeared. Sure, for most people it was just a fleeting moment, but the fact was, it opened people up to one another...to want to move together, to collaborate together.

So during a pandemic, that is the call I would bring forth to artists of all kinds (musicians, painters, writers, photographers, comedians, entertainers, etc.): move people. Move people to come together. To work together. To see and treat one another as themselves.

And if nothing else, perhaps provide a laugh to those struggling amidst the crisis. As Garrison Keillor has joked, "If you should feel really happy, be patient: This too shall pass."
