The Central Asia Institute, founded around Greg Mortenson's vision of peace through education, has at its core the realization of the girl effect -- that powerful social and economic change is brought about when girls have the opportunity to participate in their society.

It is my favorite global venture supporting women's equal rights and opportunities, though, because it isn't just focused on the effect on the economy that opportunities for women have but also the effect on the women themselves and their lives.

Though I have not yet been able to donate personally, I have been fortunate enough to have had my family as active supporters, and I hope to soon see a fundraiser talk of Mortenson's through donating myself. I have been able to share the goods news of the Central Asia Institute through twitter and facebook, but I have most enjoyed raising awareness through my writing.

Giving Work Through Samasource

After watching this video of Leila Chirayath, the founder of Samasource, I was inspired to give $50 to help her organization find work for women in East Africa and Northern Pakistan. In the video Chirayath talks about how she created a way to give meaningful work to people living in poverty. She speaks about the wasted talent that is caused by severe poverty and her idea of micro work is an innovative way to provide people with work and a decent wage. I became a fan of Samasource on Facebook so I'm hoping that some of my friends will be inspired to donate as well.

Breast Cancer Statistics

It seems clear that the incidence of breast cancer grows larger as the average income grows. But more recently, although the number of cases is still going up, better treatments are resulting in even more survival, so a fewer are dying than in the past, but it is still expensive.

Still, it seems to me it would be better to figure out how to avoid increasing breast cancer in the first place.
