David Ireland, head of Conservation Programs at the Toronto Zoo, Canada’s largest zoo put out a request for bids Monday to construct an on-site anaerobic digester facility that uses special microbes to convert manure, animal bedding, as well as grease and organic waste from zoo restaurants into biogas.
The gas, which is rich in methane, can then be burned to generate green power for the grid and heat that can be used by the zoo to offset its own use of natural gas. The zoo currently spends about $1 million a year on natural gas to heat its animal exhibits and other areas.
By burning the methane to displace the use of fossil fuels the zoo expects to reduce overall CO2 emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually, far more than the zoo’s current emissions of 7,500 tonnes annually.
