Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

As a new-comer to Social Innovation, I was astounded by the way that EVOKE succeeded in amassing such a huge and diverse team of thinkers and doers united under a common set of basic goals. I am grateful for the experience for two reasons: for giving me the inspiration and motivation to think about ways that I myself could make a difference in the world around me, and for creating what is now doubtless an immense database of visions, projects and solutions for the benefit of the rest of the world.

So what next, then?

Well, for starters, I hope that all of the mission posts from all the agents of this first season will be organised and stored in a searchable database so that others can benefit from the wonderful work done here.

As a member of the Dark Mountain Project, I have a particular interest and concern for the way that the various changes that we're slowly seeing in the world (economic collapse, climate change and growing resource scarcity to name but a few) are affecting our way of life both in the developing and the developed world. Our society is going to change in very palpable ways in our lifetime, and a lot of people don't expect it and aren't prepared to adapt. I'd like to see EVOKE set its agents on some of these 'long view' issues and see what comes of it.

I for one would definitely try to come back for a second season. It's been a lot of work, but I've found it immensely rewarding and consider myself much more informed on many many issues than I could previously have dreamed.

Thanks for the suggestion about putting Evoke material into a more searchable database. I think it would be fascinating to run all the evidence through a visualization tool to find connections that we haven't even uncovered yet.

I agree, visualization is quite the tool. If I can find the right data and time, I might implement a bit of your suggestion...

James - I really like the idea of putting this all in a searchable database, and Mita, a visualization of it would be spectacular. I hope you can do it, Nathaniel!

I also agree that this stuff should be organized to be easier to find stuff by topic. It's definitely a wonderful thing to have information that's right there when you need it!

And, if you want to test out a new way of organizing information, you could use my idea for categorizing the creative forces of the universe, which I talked about in my post, Are you ready to simplify the mission of taking good care of the wo... I tend to suggest using the level that splits things into five categories (food, water, air, warmth, light), or four (solids, liquids, gases, energy). But more might be useful, though I'm not sure if there are good words to describe those categories (I haven't tried getting that complex yet!). This is one of the few categorization systems that uses science to define the different sets of things, so it's especially practical.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
