Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

(LEARN10) Deftero Episodo (That's Greek to me ;-)

First of all, kudos to a job well done to the World Bank Institute, the game developers/writers/administrators, and everyone else involved in putting together Evoke and Season 1. I don't know if that can be said enough. Kudos as well to the thousands of people that have made Evoke Evoke.

Grounded in such a great beginning, below are ideas for the future, the first of which is what I would be most excited about:

HOW would you change the game for Season 2?
a) Have the episodes' stories originally be in a language native to the location in which the episode is taking place. And in order to have the story translated into another language, an agent must first research and answer a question (or more) about the location and its culture and language(s). This would not only serve as a reminder that there is a world out there beyond the scope of the English language, but it would also promote the learning of other languages in the process.
b) Have the heroes for each episode's story be from the location featured. This would shift the focus from aid being initiated from the outside to aid and initiatives instead starting from within, implicating that such communities are not necessarily helpless themselves. This would make sense from the game's perspective of moving into Season 2 because there are now more agents than just the original few Evoke started out as.

WHERE in the world should the network try to build up new EVOKE communities?
a) Any location where English is either not spoken or is not the native language.

WHAT new tools would you want as an EVOKE agent?
a) Ability to translate messages in other languages, meaning everyone can write and share in their native language yet still be able to communicate with one another. Just don't ask me how to do this :)

WHY would you come back for a second Season?
a) To continue to explore and integrate the challenges (and successes) we share in the world today.
b) To continue to have a community upon which to share ideas and learn from.

WHICH great challenges and social problems should the EVOKE Network tackle next?
a)
Religious conflict and understanding
b) International conflict and the history among nations
c) The concept of "foreign aid" and the benefits of it, as well as possible mis-perceptions and/or misguided actions that can come as a result of it.

WHO would you encourage to play Season 2?
a) Anyone wanting to explore their passion in life and discover more of who they are and what they care about.

Love it! Especially this gem of a quote from you: "Anyone wanting to explore their passion in life and discover more of who they are and what they care about." It's def been a discovery for me and from what I can tell by the posts and actions they're taking, many many other Agents.

"Have the heroes for each episode's story be from the location featured," brilliant! I do wonder why we should exclude English speaking countries though. The English speaking bias excluding players seems to be popping up a lot and I hope something can be done about it. As for English speaking countries though, I see an episode in Los Angles as a viable one. Many countries send their doctors to the United States to learn how to properly treat gunshot victims because, outside of war, it's just not that frequent an occurrence anywhere else. I don't know what small arms might do against the governments tanks and planes, but gun enthusiasts are on firm ground with the right to bear arms sitting squarely in the Constitution. I'm sure you'd agree that could use some new ideas to help resolve and alleviate the problem.

Paul, I love the response to question 1b because it tends to give me some advantage. But perhaps, strong participation and devotion could come from a level playing field.

Great post, Paul. I like moving the perspective away from aid and towards self-help. To be fair, a lot of the missions and quests have been about "what can you do in your community?"

I do agree that the overall 'tone' is still 'top-down' and controlling, but I think it's something the Evoke team are aware of and trying to deal with. Overall, I think it's a pretty good first effort and hope that the second will be even better. Multi-language is definitely the way to go!

I really like the language translation being part of the game, where you have to do a little work before you get to hear the story/mission in English (and other languages). Thanks!

I think the language translation is a very interesting and challenging idea. I think translation could be done easily enough using Google's translation tools (provided the original language was one in Google's database) and could provide a learning experience at the same time.

Wonderful ideas, Paul!
I agree that the most intriguing, fun, and...possibly most difficult aspect is the language translation challenges that you suggest.
But I am also particularly invested in one of your reasons for coming back: "To continue to have a community upon which to share ideas and learn from."
Throughout my life, I've been lucky to learn from a great many people, but I've never really played this sort of game, nor been involved with so many strangers who are willing to help, share, brainstorm, and question together. I think this is a wonderful benefit of such games or networks. I just wish that I could have started earlier and dropped in more. I would make it a point to do so in the next round.
The social problems you suggest are also fantastic: "religious conflict" -- but I think that we could have even more interesting conflicts and awareness-raising discussions if we keep English-speaking countries as well as extend to countries in which English is not the native tongue (I'm thinking conflicts between indigenous and 'English-manifest-destiny' sorts of conflicts that might help unpack tolerance issues and open up interesting discussions on this -- or even simple misunderstandings and mis-interpretations from translations or idiomatic expressions, and the humor and/or conflict that might occur from decoding and learning about these sorts of idiosyncratic language issues).

Thank you!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
