I deleted my first entry accidently, so I am writing a new one. :)
Listen to the right people.
A common mistake made in the past was that 'we', people of western culture, knew what was good for others, especially for weaker people. Best examples for this kind patronization is christianization and later in times of imperialism the so called "White man's burden".
Both things implied that the western cultures are superior because they could defeat the rest. After that rose a tradition of oppression which remains even after the colonies ceased to exist. That is a reason why in my opinion 'we' are also parttially responsible for the things which happen in former colony countries, for example in Africa.
I think it is time to break with this tradition. I think it is time to stop thinking to know what is good for others. I think it is time to listen to others, to show respect. Not to impose your culture and knowledge on others but to show empathy and respond to the things the others means.
We have to understand the others, if we do not we cannot change anything.
