A crash course in changing the world.
I think dinner in 2020 wont be too different from today, at least not at first sight. But taking a closer look at it, one will find some significant differences... but starting with the menu:
We are having:
- Salad as an appetizer
- Spaghetti Bolognese as main course
- fruit salad as dessert
Here are the differences compared to the same dinner in 2012:
- with transportation costs constantly rising over the last century, "standard" fruits and vegetables soon became as expensive as organic ones which is why most fruits and vegetables that can be grown in Germany are not being imported anymore but grown in huge glass-houses mostly located in Northern Germany. These satisfy more then 80% of the demand for fruits and vegetables in Germany - organically.
- Nowadays it has become unaffordable to buy pure minced-meat. Everybody has become used to having a mix of about 50% soy and 50% meat instead of pure meat. The meat has become so expensive because, just like vegetables, more then 80% of the in-country demand is being satisfied by organically produced pork and beef from within Germany.
- With the prices for grain constantly rising, the pasta itself has become more expensive too. Unfortunately people havent found a solution yet, how to produce the enormous amount of grain that people demand within the country so it is still being imported.
- Compared to 2012 the fruit salad contains less tropical fruits like mango and pineapple and more central-european fruits like apples, pears and berries. It is still expensive because most ingredients are organic but having tropical fruits has become so expensive that most people only have them on special days like christmas.
All in all, dinner in 2012 has become way more expensive then it used to be a century ago BUT at the same time the quality of the things we are eating is way better then it used to be due to organic production within the country. With the prices for food rising high in the last years, the demand lowered - not because people couldnt afford it anymore but because they stopped throwing away so much!
