When I was 100 years I wouldn't know my neighbour

...I would remind people of a long lost community spirit. A spirit that got lost because of two factors: the development of the so-called "service culture" and the growing ignorance towards our fellow human beings.
Even though online platforms like Facebook and Twitter nowadays create a feeling of connectedness that everyone can participate in, it is not the way people used to be connected a hundred years ago. It is a superficial and selective way of connectedness. A way that allows for total ignorance for the lifes of others while still being virtual friends according to a list on a website. A way that allows people to have hundreds of virtual freinds while being completely alone in real life, not even knowing the names of their neighbours.
Back in the old times people used to be heavily dependant on family, neighbours and friends. Shared their skills, knowledge and ideas to achieve common goals. If one had a problem, was injured, needed a repair or support, he used to know someone who could help. Nowadays the only option many people have is to call a service agent, a plumber, electrician, logistics provider. Someone they do not know and probably do not trust but they do not see any other option in a world where there is a "guy" for everything. Probably their neighbour could help but how could they know, not even knowing his or her name?
I think the world (especially the western) nowadays lacks of a sense of community spirit and looking at current developments, especially in the internet area, it is unlikely that this process of "anonymization" will stop in the near future.
