A crash course in changing the world.
As he crosses the corner a first ray of sunlight touches his face. "Glad to see a little bit of summer again" Keith mumbles to himself. Times have changed since the discovery. “I can’t believe how far we’ve turned our back towards nature”. In several minutes he will be there, at the place where it all started.
While pedaling his bike, Keith searches his memory “how did it all begin?” Suddenly he remembers. Back in the fall of 2013 scientists invented a new kind of food with the use of bio-research. “Twice as healthy and way more easy to grow” he recalls, "well they sure knew how to sell it." World leaders spoke of a green revolution. “This will bring an end to poverty and famine” some said. Others even said that a new era in food production had arrived and soon the crop spread around the world.
It took a while before the first results came in. “Huge FDA mistake takes its first life” reported the New York Times. The front-page of the Sun was filled with even more sensation “Food from heaven turns into killer crop”. What had happened? A voice in Keith’s head provides the answer “Now we know”. Somehow the food seemed to be draining water from the bodies nerve system, causing severe brain damage. The production soon halted and the UN requested new research in search of answers. As
soon as the results came in it became clear. “Devastating” remembers Keith. Most governments immediately banned production, causing huge food shortages.
An alternative had to be found. “And that’s where I came in”, a smile enters Keith’s face as he approaches the gate. “Hi there Pete, how are the tomato’s growing?” Keith asks. “Great Keith great, same for the cabbage!” Pete responds proudly. Locally grown food has taken a liftoff since the gap in food production. Keith founded a community, responsible for growing local food with the help of the neighborhood.
As he approaches a field of carrots a reporter of the local newspaper walks towards him. “Sir, sir! May I ask you some questions” the reporter yells. “What do you like best about this project?” Keith thinks for a while and answers firmly “Personally I like that we enable locals to grow their own food, enable them to eat healthier and are able to teach our kids about food. Once again we grow food close to ourselves”.
