Stop the World Bank's $3.75 billion loan to fund dirty coal

Dear Friend,
I know it's only a few days since we
last e-mailed you, but it's critical that as many people as possible
take action on this important issue before the 8 April deadline.
Stop the World
Bank's Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"">$3.75
billion loan to fund
dirty coal in South Africa
In solidarity with campaigners in
South Africa, WDM has joined a call to the UK government to say "no!" to
the World Bank providing a $3.75 billion loan to South African energy
giant Eskom to build a new dirty coal-fired power station.
Eskom will use the project as an
excuse to raise the cost of energy for people living in South Africa,
reducing access vital for development and also causing environmental
destruction - outcomes which will hit poorest people the hardest. WDM is
calling for the UK government, the biggest single donor to the World
Bank, to vote against this loan.
The project would also increase debt
for South Africa which would fall most heavily on the poorest people.
This is outrageous when it is the UK which owes a massive climate debt
to these people. In addition, the proposal highlights why it is
completely hypocritical for the World Bank to be involved in
administering funds provided to help tackle climate change.
Please take action now
